music and yoga

Music is important in yoga mainly to set a emotional tone. Whether we are consciously aware of it or not, we are affected physically, spiritually and mentally by the sounds we hear. Alternatively, soothing sounds or a slow mantra can ease the mind and body to relax, letting the mind's eye turn inward.

Listening to music and practicing yoga are activities that despite their differences and origins are inherently similar. They make us feel good and enhance our wellbeing. They both speak the universal language of love. Music is as old as the human race and has remained a constant through the evolution of culture within our species.

Music helps us to focus more than silence, especially in cities with its innumerable ambient sounds. When combined with yoga, the health benefit is further enhanced. Depending on the postures and movements that one is doing, there is a place for both instrumental and lyrical music in yoga. And just like yoga, studies have shown that music has physiological benefits as well.

Music and musicians are directly related with the factors in yoga like sound, time and performance, as every musician needs the utmost mental concentration for music creation.
